Use SLS free products, including shampoo, bath/shower gel and toothpaste.

Switch factory made snacks which may contain additives and preservatives for home made fruit salads, flapjacks and granola bars.

Keep a supply of ready-chopped vegetables like carrots in the fridge for kids to snack on when they get home from school rather than sweets and crisps, also bulk cook home made dinner and then freeze for when you’re short of time. Home-made flapjacks, nutty bars are also great for little ones lunch boxes.

Use re-usable rather than disposable nappies.

Get them into good habits by encouraging them to walk to school, sports clubs, friends houses etc. rather than using the car.

Teach them about recycling – perhaps you could have fun, different coloured bins to make recycling more interesting for them.

Grow your own fruit and vegetables with them, kids love watching things grow! Or take a family trip to local farmers markets to get them thinking about where their food comes from.

Take a shower rather than a bath to save water and don’t leave the tap running while you brush your teeth!

Have a ‘green’ birthday party – why not give your friends a ‘green’ gift like a mini plant or some seeds to grow their own vegetables instead of a plastic party bag.

For treats and weekend activities why not go into the country, catch your own fish for the BBQ, go for a nature trail, horse riding or something more natural than the expensive theme parks.

We’ve had the Brazilian wax, the amazing Brazilian Blow Dry, now the latest export from Brazil is the Brazilian Tummy Tuck! Of course a far more serious procedure but one that could potentially be a safer and far more successful alternative for many women from the standard procedure.

A tummy tuck is recognised as being one of the most complex procedures, with one of the highest rates of complication. Now there’s a way of achieving a more defined and flatter stomach using a safer, less painful method.

‘The same amount of skin is removed and we still tighten the muscles, but the difference is we don’t create huge spaces in the abdomen that require the use of drains and release fluid in the days following the operation. ’ Says Professor James Frame who has introduced the Brazilian Tummy Tuck to the UK ‘instead we make small passages within the fat, so there’s no large space that can fill with fluid’.

Professor James Frame is a registered Surgery Shield member.

I admit I have failed on the regular blogging – however it hasn’t been without good cause. You see we have been made aware of a huge gap in modern day insurance that leaves children and their families completely venerable.

Every year, hundreds of children are sent abroad for surgery, sometimes Cancer treatment, Cerebral Palsy suffers, Cystic Fibrosis – usually their local NHS trust won’t or can’t pay for the treatment, the list is endless – not a week goes by without several parents contacting us. Read your local paper, every week they’re supporting a campaign. The problem is that NO ONE will insure these children or their families to have this surgery, so added to their stress they have to travel to places such as USA knowing they are completely uninsured.

We think this is crazy and unfair so plan to change it!

A new policy is being developed which is designed specifically for children medi-travellers protecting them every step of their way on their brave journey – all proceeds are then pushed back into a fund towards their surgery. It’s awful to see, but we have so many families enquiring and waiting for this policy.

Below are several links for their fund raising appeals.

“A mother never quite leaves her children at home, even when she doesn’t take them along”

The childcare dilemma – find out what works best for you, try nanny sharing, part-time nursery placements and reciprocal baby-sitting until you find a routine you can settle into.

Good planning is vital, co-ordinate your diary with your partner, friends, family etc. so you know who’s doing what and when.

Support is key, build a strong support network with friends and family so that you can help others out and have it returned when you need it most.

Stay ahead of the game – always work in advance of deadlines because by leaving things to the last minute, you might run into problems if the nanny calls in sick!

Make clear definitions between work-time and family-time. Switch off your computer and spent quality time with your children.

Keep up to speed in your profession. Do courses, read publications etc. so that you’re not left behind. This is particularly important if you are working from home and may be missing out on info in the office.

Don’t feel guilty. It’s not productive and you need to remind yourself that if you’re feeling fulfilled by having a career as well as being a Mum, then that is ultimately better for your child.

Consider flexible-working. If you are a parent of a child under 6 years old, then you can request flexible-working hours, such as evenings, and your employer is legally obliged to consider them.

Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.
Hans Christian Anderson

Drink plenty of water, keep a large bottle on your desk or make sure you always have a large glass of water next to you to sip throughout the day.

Keep a supply of nuts and seeds in your desk drawer and/or handbag and snack regularly throughout the day

Snack on fruit, much better than filling up on crisps and biscuits at the staff canteen!

Swap ‘bad’ snacks for good ones – swap biscuits for oatcakes; cake for flapjacks etc.

Get up from your desk and move around at least once every hour.

Do some exercise on your coffee and lunch breaks – even if that just means getting up and walking round the car park!

If possible walk/run/cycle to and from work, or at least part of your journey if you can.

Choose to take the stairs rather than lifts whenever possible – the more activity you can build into your day the better you’ll feel.

Network – running your own business can be quite isolating. Build up a network of contacts and other entrepreneurs for advice and get yourself known – the more people who know who you are and what you do the more work you’ll get referred to you

Support – the support of family and friends is vital to helping you succeed.

Be flexible – especially in the early days of your business you will have to work flexibly to meet the needs of your clients, as that’s what will gain you future work

Admit to yourself when you’ve made a mistake and learn from it. You have to be your own worst critic when you’re an entrepreneur!

Write a business plan and refer back to it often. Make changes where necessary as you go along so that you always have something to measure your progress against.

Get advice from wherever you can – local business networks, the DTI, other entrepreneurs etc.

Know your market – do your market research thoroughly and refresh your knowledge as often as you think necessary.

Successful marketing is the key to growth – use whatever means you can to market your business, door-knock your neighbouring businesses and introduce yourself, use the internet and advertise on community websites. Get yourself a website built etc.

Delegate – accept you can’t do everything yourself and also that there may be people who can do certain things better than you! If you find a good book-keeper, PR etc. then hold onto them! They’ll free up more of your time to spend on what you’re good at.

Focus – focus on your main aims in your business to keep you motivated and on track.
